The fight of January 8, 1815, is one of the best-known events of the War of 1812, and this print commemorates it. Fought on the Chalmette plain below the city, it was the war's last major engagement, and it came after the peace treaty had been signed at Ghent, though word had not yet reached Louisiana. Andrew Jackson's mixed force of regulars, militiamen and volunteers held its ground against British troops under Edward Pakenham, and the victory made Jackson a national hero. The print was registered for copyright on May 29, 1841, and the associated name, Duval, comes from a shelflist card whose details are unverified.
