A color lithograph credited to the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison pairs the Battle of New Orleans with the names of Andrew Jackson and Sir Edward Pakenham, the British commander who was killed in the attack. Fought on January 8, 1815, it was the last major engagement of the War of 1812, and it made Jackson a national hero even though a peace treaty had already been signed at Ghent. Printed around 1890, roughly seventy-five years later, the picture reflects how Americans remembered the battle as a central part of the Jackson legend.
