Dated February 8, 1898, this print is number 13 in a series of Mississippi River views, and it turns to the working waterfront at New Orleans, where the river curves past the city. In the 1890s the port was one of the busiest in the country, moving cotton, sugar, and other goods from the Mississippi valley to markets across the Gulf and overseas. Ships of various sizes crowded the wharves, so the scene shows a city whose economy depended on the river. Photographs like this one preserve a view of the harbor as it looked before the twentieth century changed its docks.
