Along St. Charles Avenue, the oak-lined boulevard in New Orleans, this stereo card captures a street known for its shade trees and the large houses set back behind their lawns around 1901. The avenue's streetcar line, electrified in 1893, ran down its center and carried residents and visitors past those homes. The card was published by M.H. Zahner of Niagara Falls, New York, a maker of views for stereoscopes, which were a popular parlor entertainment in the early 1900s. Its two nearly identical images were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave the street a sense of depth.
