St. Charles Avenue, the oak-shaded boulevard that runs uptown from the central business district through the Garden District, drew photographers for decades. This stereograph, dated around 1901 and issued by M.H. Zahner of Niagara Falls, New York, was meant to be seen as a pair of slightly offset images through a stereoscope at home. Stereo cards like this were a popular parlor entertainment in the early 1900s, and the Griffith & Griffith copyright notice shows the view was produced for commercial sale. The avenue's electric streetcar line, which had been running since the 1890s, is one of the features that made the street a familiar sight to visitors and residents alike.
