New Orleans is famous for its ironwork, and this picture puts the city's cast and wrought iron balconies front and center, with the corner of a building and the street running past it. Ironwork of this kind became a signature of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny, where galleries and railings were built during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries under Spanish and later American rule. Photographs like this one, made around 1925, document how these decorative elements stood as the city's architecture was being recorded and promoted to visitors. The railings' curling scrollwork is still one of the first things people notice about the neighborhood today.
