The Saint Charles theater was one of the largest and most fashionable playhouses in 19th-century New Orleans, a city where French and American theatrical traditions met. Several theaters bearing the name were built and destroyed by fire over the decades, and the house hosted touring opera and drama companies. The record gives no date for this print and mentions a possible associated name only on an unverified shelflist card, so its exact age and maker remain open questions. The building's façade and street setting are the best clues to the period it shows.
