Rampart Street, the thoroughfare along the edge of New Orleans's old French Quarter, is the subject of this 1927 etching, which bears the artist's monogram and date on the plate and a second monogram in pencil below. Rampart ran between the Vieux Carré and the neighborhoods beyond it, a mix of shops, saloons, and residences with a lively reputation that dated back to the nearby Storyville district, closed by federal order in 1917. Printmakers in the 1920s were drawn to the city's old streets, balconies, and waterfront, and the fine line work of this impression shows how carefully they recorded the texture of everyday urban life.
