Drawn by S. Seymour and engraved by J. W. Steele, this print was published in Philadelphia by William H. Morgan around 1815, the year of the Battle of New Orleans. On January 8, 1815, forces under Andrew Jackson repulsed a British army attacking the city, even though the Treaty of Ghent had already been signed to end the War of 1812 and word had not yet reached the combatants. The victory made Jackson a national hero and helped launch his later political career. Engravings like this one carried the story of the battle to American audiences eager for patriotic subjects.
