Few images in the Detroit Publishing Company collection show water inside a burial ground, but this glass negative shows a canal winding through Metairie Cemetery on the edge of New Orleans. The cemetery opened in 1872 on the grounds of a former racetrack, and its designers used water features and drainage channels in a city where the high water table made in-ground burial difficult. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm active in the early 1900s, sent photographers across the country to document towns, landscapes and public places, and this negative reflects that wider project. Look for the way the cemetery's tombs and plantings line the water's edge.
