Audubon Place is a private residential street in the Uptown section of New Orleans, and this glass-plate view of its gates shows a neighborhood built for the city's well-to-do families in the early 1900s. The street takes its name from nearby Audubon Park, and its controlled entrances reflect the era's interest in sheltered, exclusive residential enclaves. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this c1906 negative, sold views like this to travelers and publishers, so the picture documents both a specific address and the way American cities presented their most fashionable streets to the public.
