An open-air courtyard and a sweeping staircase anchor this view of an old New Orleans hotel, a layout typical of buildings in the city's older quarters. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from between 1910 and 1920 and belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold travel views of American cities and landscapes during those years. Its shaded court and open stairwell show how hotels arranged guest rooms around shared spaces that caught air and light. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
