The Old Orleans Hotel's open court and stairway show how many New Orleans lodgings were arranged around an interior yard, with stairs and galleries climbing past rooms that opened onto shared air and light. Such courtyard layouts were a long-standing feature of the city's older buildings, where the open space served as a cool, ventilated center in a hot, humid climate. This view was made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns and landmarks across the United States for sale as views and postcards. Its glass plate negative captures the building as a working hotel, with the stairway and courtyard arranged for daily traffic.
