This view shows the Saint Louis Hotel on Royal Street in New Orleans, though the record's title reads "Hotel Royal," and the entryways are marked "Louis Hotel." Built in the French Quarter in the 1830s, the hotel was among the city's most fashionable addresses in the antebellum decades. Its large domed rotunda was once a site of slave auctions, a history that is now part of the building's story. By around 1906, when this glass negative was made, the hotel was an older landmark whose ornate façade still stood out on a busy downtown corner.
