The Denechaud Hotel was one of the large commercial hotels serving New Orleans in the early 1900s, when the city's downtown was filling with business travelers, cotton brokers, and visitors drawn by the port and the winter social season. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers worked across the United States in these years. Its crisp detail and large format show how the company documented American streetscapes and buildings for sale as views. Comparing the hotel's façade with the street life around it gives a useful look at how the city presented itself to visitors at the time.
