Many of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of New Orleans were made for travelers and postcard buyers, and this one shows the public library, a civic building that reflected the city's growing commitment to reading rooms and free access to books in the early 1900s. The company's large-format glass negatives, made between about 1900 and 1910, recorded streets and landmarks in unusually fine detail, so the architecture and the surrounding street life are worth a close look. Because the record does not describe the building's interior or its exact location, the picture is best read as a snapshot of how a Southern city presented its institutions to the public at the turn of the century.
