The banana conveyors on the New Orleans waterfront set this view apart, and the record ties it to the freighter Cartaco. The United Fruit Company, founded in 1899, moved enormous volumes of bananas from Central America and the Caribbean through New Orleans, one of the busiest fruit ports in the country. Mechanical conveyors were a practical way to move perishable cargo quickly from ship to shore. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1910, was a commercial firm known for its wide photographic record of American cities, industries and landscapes.
