A banner strung across the steamboat's upper deck reads "Glad-U Kum, April 10-15, 1910," which pins this view to one specific week in spring 1910 in New Orleans. The stern-wheeler is shown carrying sightseers, part of the river excursion trade that drew visitors to the city's waterfront along the Mississippi. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, sold views of American cities and scenery to travelers and postcard buyers in the early twentieth century. Its photographs preserve how paddle-wheel excursion boats and the working river looked before the automobile reshaped tourism.
