Few pictures in this set show the working waterfront as plainly as this glass negative of oyster and charcoal boats gathered in the old basin at New Orleans. The boats were the workhorses of the city's shellfish and fuel trade, bringing oysters from the Gulf coast and charcoal from the surrounding region to be sold along the wharves. Made around 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and commerce, the image records a harbor life that depended on small wooden vessels and hand labor long before modern shipping reshaped the port.
