Touro Infirmary, the hospital shown here, was founded in the 1850s with funds from the will of Judah Touro, a New Orleans merchant and philanthropist, and it became one of the city's major medical institutions. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made around 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its wide-ranging views of American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century. The plate was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, and it now belongs to the Library of Congress. Its date is an estimate, so the building's architecture and surroundings are useful clues to when it was photographed.
