The French Market in New Orleans, which has operated on the edge of the French Quarter since the early 1700s, is the subject here, shown with carts and wagons that once carried produce and goods through its stalls. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and street life around 1900 and sold the images as color-tinted prints and postcards. The title and date are both uncertain: the "1906?" is an estimate, and the title comes from the original jacket. Its arrival at the Colorado collection as a 1949 gift explains how such a regional view ended up in a national archive.
