The French Quarter of New Orleans, photographed on a glass plate negative sometime between 1880 and 1897, shows a street lined with the commercial storefronts that gave the district its working character. The print is attributed to William Henry Jackson, the Colorado-born photographer best known for his western survey work, and the negative passed through the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large catalog of American scenes made many such views widely available. The Quarter, with its Spanish and French colonial-era buildings and dense mix of residents and trades, was a neighborhood the photographers of the period were drawn to as an example of old-world character within an American city.
