Tulane University's campus in New Orleans is the subject here, a view of the institution as it stood in the early twentieth century, when the school was still growing into its role as a major private university. The negative is a large 8 x 10 inch glass plate made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its vast photographic survey of American towns, landmarks and institutions around 1900 to 1920. Much of the company's work was produced to be reproduced as postcards and travel views, so images like this one capture how a campus presented itself to visitors and the public at the time.
