The French Market in New Orleans, a row of open-sided stalls along the Mississippi riverfront, is the subject here, shown with carts and wagons drawn up among the vendors. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch glass plate, and the record attributes it to photographer William Henry Jackson, whose views of American cities were widely sold in the 1890s. The market had been trading on this spot for well over a century, drawing farmers, fishermen and merchants from across the city's varied communities. Its mix of wagons and crowded stalls shows how the old commercial life of the Quarter operated before streetcars and modern grocery stores reshaped city buying habits.
