The Old French Market in New Orleans, with its carts and wagons drawn up along the street, shows a working market district at the end of the nineteenth century. The French Market grew out of an open-air trading ground on the Mississippi riverfront that dates to the early eighteenth century, when produce, fish, and goods from the surrounding plantations and farms reached the city by river and road. This glass negative was made by the photographer William Henry Jackson, whose views of American cities and landscapes were later issued through the Detroit Publishing Company. Carts and wagons like these were the everyday means of moving goods through the market, so the scene captures the commerce that defined the district.
