Built on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, the French Opera House opened in 1859 and became one of the most celebrated theaters in the South, staging French and Italian opera for the city's Creole audiences. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes around 1900, made this glass plate negative at about that time. A fire destroyed the house in 1919, so this view preserves a landmark that no longer stands. The negative is broken at the lower right and has been taped to a second sheet of glass, a reminder of how fragile early dry plates could be.
