The Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street in New Orleans is the subject here, a bar whose name recalls the anise-flavored spirit that drew visitors to the French Quarter for generations. The Absinthe House is traditionally dated to the early 1800s, and by the time this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1910, it had long been a well-known stop for travelers. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many views of American cities and landmarks for tourism and rail promotion in these years, so the picture also documents how the city's old drinking houses were presented to the public. Absinthe was banned in the United States in 1912, which gives the image added interest as a record of the place just before that change.
