Behind the street fronts of the French Quarter, this courtyard shows the enclosed, shaded outdoor room that defines much of old New Orleans. Many of the Quarter's courtyards took their present look after the fires of 1788 and 1794 destroyed much of the early town, when Spanish colonial authorities required masonry construction and rebuilt in a style that blended Spanish and Creole forms. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced views of American cities and landscapes around 1900, made this large glass plate negative, and its scale captures fine detail in the stonework, galleries and plantings.
