Strung between balconies and iron railings, the wash lines in this courtyard view show how working households in New Orleans made use of every bit of shared space. Around 1925 the city's older neighborhoods were dense with multi-family buildings, where laundry was often hung in open yards and galleries because most homes had no drying room. Courtyards like this one were the everyday center of life for many residents, and the photograph captures a domestic routine that rarely made it into civic pictures of the city. Its catalog record offers little beyond the title and date, so the scene is best read as a window onto that period's ordinary labor.
