The Southern Yacht Club was a sporting institution on Lake Pontchartrain, on the north edge of New Orleans, and this view of its grounds is credited to photographer John N. Teunisson. The record dates the print only to a span between 1895 and 1910, and the attribution comes from an old caption card, so those details should be read as unverified. The club had been founded in the mid-nineteenth century, and yacht clubs of this era were social gathering places for the city's leisured families as well as venues for racing small sailboats on the lake. The photograph offers a glimpse of that waterfront life during the decades when New Orleans was growing into a major Gulf port.
