Two Black women stand before a building in New Orleans in this photograph, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1925. The record does not name the women or the specific building, so the picture's value lies mainly in what it shows of ordinary urban life in the period. In the 1920s New Orleans was a major port and a center of Black cultural and working life, and street-level portraits like this one, taken outside homes and workplaces, preserve how people presented themselves in their everyday surroundings during those years.
