A horse-drawn milk cart rolls past modest houses in New Orleans, captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1910. The company, based in Detroit, sold views of American towns, landscapes and everyday scenes, and its photographers traveled widely with large-format cameras to document them. Milk delivery by cart was a common sight in American cities before motor trucks and bottling plants took over the trade, and the subject offers a glimpse of the neighborhood routines that kept urban households supplied. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
