The window and balcony of the Girod House, a Chartres Street building in New Orleans' French Quarter, are the focus of this 1937 watercolor by Alvyk Boyd Cruise. Nicholas Girod, who served as mayor of New Orleans in the years after the Louisiana Purchase, is associated with the house, which later became widely known as the Napoleon House. Cruise made the drawing as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey, a Depression-era federal project that recorded older American buildings in careful drawings and photographs. Its delicate rendering of the ironwork and shuttered openings shows the French Quarter's blend of colonial-era design and later changes.
