Richmond College, the institution that became the University of Richmond, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of American campuses and streetscapes made in the early twentieth century. The company, based in Detroit, produced large numbers of photographs and hand-colored prints for sale, and its Virginia views document the state's towns as they looked before the First World War. The college was then a Baptist-affiliated men's school on its Richmond campus, and the image offers a record of its buildings and grounds during that period. Because the plate is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, it preserves finer detail than a later print made from it.
