Most pictures on this board show Richmond's civic and commercial streets, but this one turns to St. Peter's, the Catholic cathedral that has anchored the city's Catholic community since the nineteenth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and landmarks in the early twentieth century for travel promotion and sale, made this 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative between 1905 and 1920. The plate later passed through the State Historical Society of Colorado, which gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949. Its survival shows how such commercial views of churches and streetscapes became a lasting visual record of the period.
