This glass negative records Sacred Heart Cathedral in Richmond, Virginia, the Catholic church that the city's parishioners knew as a landmark of their own neighborhood. The image dates to roughly the 1910s, when the Detroit Publishing Company was sending photographers across the country to document cities, churches, and rural scenery for postcards, lantern slides, and commercial sale. Its 8 by 10 inch plate offers far more detail than a postcard, so the stonework, street setting, and surroundings can be studied closely today.
