Watts Hall stands on the campus of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, a Presbyterian school that moved to the city in 1898 after more than eight decades in Hampden-Sydney. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed buildings, streets and landscapes across the United States in the years around 1905 to 1920 and sold views to publishers and travelers. Seminary buildings of this period often reflect the collegiate architecture popular at the time, and the picture captures the campus as it looked before later growth changed the grounds.
