The image records the first convention of the National Women's Trade Union League, held in Richmond, Virginia, in November 1907. The league was founded in 1903 to organize women workers into trade unions and to press for better wages, shorter hours and safer conditions, and it drew support from both working women and middle-class reformers. Holding its inaugural national gathering in Richmond, a Southern industrial city, was notable at a time when women's labor organizing was still contested, and the photograph preserves a record of that meeting. Because this halftone reproduces an earlier photoprint, the surviving image is a secondhand copy, so fine details of the delegates are hard to make out.
