A caption across the bottom singles out comedian Ezra Kendall, promising "smiles for all and a frown for none," and that line sets this sheet apart from the other minstrel posters in the group. The poster advertises William H. West's Big Minstrel Jubilee, a company that took the name of the earlier Primrose & West troupe, whose founders had been among the best-known minstrel managers of the 1880s and 1890s. Minstrel shows of this era mixed blackface comedy, songs and specialty acts, and star comics like Kendall drew audiences on the strength of their names. The poster was printed in 1898 by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York, one of the leading firms producing large color posters for touring theatrical companies.
