Tom Lewis, billed on this 1899 color lithograph as "the great comedian," is the performer the caption singles out for William H. West's Big Minstrel Jubilee. Late nineteenth-century minstrel shows were touring entertainments built on song, dance, and comic routines, and the largest troupes promoted themselves as spectacles. The poster was printed by the Strobridge Litho Co., a Cincinnati and New York firm known for theatrical advertising, and its bold color was designed to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets.
