The back cover of this minstrel program promotes William H. West's "great achievement," a staged reenactment of the storming of San Juan Hill, and calls it "the most stirring scene ever produced on any stage." The color lithograph, printed in 1899 by the Strobridge Litho. Co. of Cincinnati and New York, shows a mounted figure meant to be Theodore Roosevelt. The battle took place in July 1898 near Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and Roosevelt, then leading the Rough Riders, became a national figure through it. That fame explains why a theater show would build a spectacle around the charge.
