The caption names Ezra Kendall, a comedian in the company, and promises "smiles for all and a frown for none." The show continued William H. West's minstrel troupe, which had earlier toured as Primrose & West with George Primrose, one of the best-known partnerships in American minstrelsy. Touring minstrel companies of this period mixed music, comic routines and novelty acts, and they relied on large posters like this one to draw crowds before they arrived. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed the sheet in color, and at roughly nine by six feet it was built to be read from across a street.
