Carroll Johnson, the comedian, is the figure singled out in the caption of this 1898 color lithograph advertising William H. West's Big Minstrel Jubilee, a show that had previously traveled under the name Primrose & West. Minstrel troupes of this era combined musical numbers, comic dialogue, and variety acts, and their posters were meant to sell that energy to passersby on the street. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed the sheet, one of many such posters the firm produced for touring entertainments of the period.
