Carroll Johnson, billed here as "the artistic Canadian," is the performer singled out on this 1899 color lithograph for William H. West's Big Minstrel Jubilee. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it, and the firm was a leading maker of bold color posters that advertised touring theatrical companies. Late nineteenth-century minstrel shows built their programs on comic routines and music, and many performers appeared in blackface, though Black performers also worked within the form. The poster is worth viewing with that history in mind, since its caricatures reflect the racial stereotypes that shaped popular entertainment of the period.
