William H. West's Big Minstrel Jubilee is a color lithograph poster from 1899, printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York and registered for copyright that same year. It advertised West, a Black American minstrel performer and producer who ran his own touring company and built his reputation on the blackface minstrel show, a format that dominated American popular theater in the nineteenth century. Posters like this one were meant to be seen from the street, so their bold color and large lettering carried the star's name and the show's promise of song, dance and comic sketches to passing audiences. The surviving copy is missing its upper right corner, a common fate for posters that were pasted to walls and fences and worn away over time.
