Bull Bayou, Louisiana, was photographed in 1919, the year the country was turning from wartime production back to peacetime work and recovering from the influenza epidemic of the previous fall. Louisiana's rural economy then rested on farming, timber, and the fishing and trapping that bayou waters supported, with lumber mills drawing labor into the parishes. Rail lines and river and bayou traffic tied outlying communities to larger markets, especially New Orleans. Daily life across the state was still shaped by Jim Crow segregation and by tenant farming arrangements that bound many families to the land.
