New Orleans in 1919 was emerging from the First World War with its port still busy and its mood uncertain. The influenza epidemic of the previous autumn had filled the city's hospitals and burial grounds, and residents were still counting the losses as the year began. The Eighteenth Amendment had been ratified in January 1919, so brewers, saloon keepers and dockside merchants were bracing for national prohibition, which would take effect the following January. Along the riverfront, longshoremen and cargo handlers kept the wharves working, while the French Quarter and the uptown avenues went on with their daily routines.
