New Orleans in 1909 drew much of its wealth from the timber trade. Sawmills and cypress and pine yards along the river and the canals shipped lumber cut from the swamps and piney woods of south Louisiana to markets across the country. The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans, created in 1896, oversaw the public wharves and piers that let the port handle this growing cargo. Tulane University had moved its uptown campus on St. Charles Avenue in the mid-1890s, and students and professors were part of a city increasingly divided between the older Creole and American downtown and the newer uptown neighborhoods. Carnival was a yearly fixture, with krewes building floats and holding night parades through the streets, and Mardi Gras season filled the city with crowds that the residents took great pride in.
