Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, had been operating on its uptown campus since the 1880s, when Paul Tulane's bequest helped turn the old Academy of the Sciences site into a full university. By 1909 the school was consolidating its identity as a private institution with medical, law, and engineering programs, while the city around it still ran on cotton, the port, shipping along the Mississippi, and a growing railroad and cargo trade. New Orleans in those years was also deeply divided by segregation laws that Louisiana had tightened in the 1890s, and the university's campus life reflected the social order of the white elite who largely populated its student body. Visitors and alumni of the day would have known the place as one of the South's leading centers of higher learning.
