New Orleans in 1915 was a city of more than 300,000 people, still tied to the Mississippi and to the railroads and steamship lines that moved goods through its docks. Its port and rail yards handled cargo bound for the interior and for ships at sea, and the business district around Canal Street remained the commercial center for merchants across the Gulf South. Storyville, the licensed red-light district near Basin Street, was open that year, and its cabarets and dance halls were among the places where ragtime and early jazz were played, sounds that would soon travel well beyond the city. Locals who knew the riverfront would have recognized it as a place where work, music and nightlife crowded together along the same few blocks.
